About the film:

Popular, outgoing Fujino is celebrated by her classmates for her funny comics in the class newspaper. One day, her teacher asks her to share the space with Kyomoto, a truant recluse whose beautiful artwork sparks a competitive fervor in Fujino. What starts as jealousy transforms when Fujino realizes their shared passion for drawing.

Based on the acclaimed manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of Chainsaw Man, Look Back (2024) captures the highs and lows of pursuing artistic excellence and the special bonds formed through creative collaboration. The heart-wrenching story is the stunning feature-length directorial debut from Kiyotaka Oshiyama that will leave you in tears and inspire you to chase your own artistic dreams.

About the filmmaker:

Kiyotaka Oshiyama is a Japanese animator, director, screenwriter, and president of Studio Durian. Oshiyama worked as a key animator on acclaimed feature films such as The First Slam Dunk (2022), Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017), and Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (2009), as well as Studio Ghibli features The Boy and the Heron (2023), The Wind Rises (2013), and The Secret World of Arrietty (2010). He was the animation director on Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos (2011), a character designer for the on-going series Chainsaw Man, and directed the series Flip Flappers (2016) and the full length film Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s New Dinosaur (2020).

Directed and adapted for the screen by Oshiyama in his feature directorial debut, Look Back (2024) is based on the critically acclaimed original manga by best-selling author Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man). The film premiered out of competition at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
