About the filmmaker:
Quentin Tarantino is an American filmmaker originally from Knoxville, Tenessee. He spent his youth in a suburb of Los Angeles, where he became interested in film at an early age. This early passion lead him to work in a video store in his early 20s, where he spent his days with his friend Roger Avary, a filmmaker with whom he wrote Pulp Fiction (1994) several years later. Also during this time, Tarantino wrote the scripts for Dir. Tony Scott’s True Romance (1993) and Dir. William Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers (1994).
In 1992, Tarantino made a splash with his directorial debut Reservoir Dogs. The film premiered at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, and it instantly became one of the festival’s most talked about films. It won awards at numerous festivals, including the FIPRESCI Prize at TIFF as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay at SITGES. Tarantino’s real success, however, came with his second film, Pulp Fiction (1994). The film premiered at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or. It earned seven Oscar nominations at the 1995 Academy Awards, and it won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. His subsequent features include Jackie Brown (1997), Kill Bill Volume 1 (2003), Kill Bill Volume 2 (2004), and Grindhouse (2007). Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds (2009) was also met with great success, garnering eight Oscar nominations and earning Christoph Waltz the Academy Award for Best Actor, as well as the prize for Best Actor at Cannes. His latest films, Django Unchained (2012), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood (2019) have all earned Academy Awards and gained both commercial and critical success.
