This documentary feature examines the tragic tale of a Chicago rock band on the cusp of superstardom that was cut short by its frontman’s suicide. Material Issue was a power pop trio that was literally out of time, sandwiched between the post-punk era of the 80s and the alternative rock movement of the 90s, searching for its identity in the gritty world of rock and roll.
The film features original band members Mike Zelenko and Ted Ansani, the first interviews of the family of Jim Ellison since his passing, and others others that helped shape the world of the band, including Jeff Murphy, Joe Shanahan, Jay O’Rourke, Jeff Kwatinetz, Matt Pinfield, Steve Albini and more.

The music, the artists and the hype that defined a generation. Drop into the Pacific Northwest at the start of the Nineties and watch a vibrant underground scene explode into a global grunge media frenzy. HYPE! (1996) follows the music from local bands playing for their friends to Sub Pop’s brilliant exploitation of “the Seattle Sound,” to Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” charting at #1.
Questions of money, authenticity and fame arise as “grunge fashion” hits the runways and a mass migration of wanna-be Seattle bands saturates the city. Interspersed throughout are fascinating introspective interviews with members of Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Mudhoney and the Fastbacks — as well as a ton of live performances sure to ping the pleasure center of any musichead’s head.
“an all-time great rock doc”
—Noel Murray, Los Angeles Times

2016 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature
The incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse—in her own words. Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can.
“An extraordinary, powerful work”
—IndieWire
A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world’s attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense—she wrote and sung from the heart using her musical gifts to analyse her own problems. The combination of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most unique and adored songs of the modern era. Her huge success, however, resulted in relentless and invasive media attention which coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and precarious lifestyle saw her life tragically begin to unravel. Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.
