World premiere, 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.

When deeply conservative English local Edith Swan and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, her rowdy, foul-mouthed, Irish migrant neighbor Rose Gooding is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women—led by Police Officer Gladys Moss—begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect something is amiss and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

“it has a gloriously antic spirit and it sends you out on a high”

—Sandra Hull, Sydney Morning Herald

About the filmmaker:

Thea Sharrock is an English theatre and film director. Sharrock began her dramatic career directing for the stage, and in 2000 she won the James Menzies-Kitchin young director of the year award, making her stage directorial debut with a production of Caryl Churchill’s Top Girls, which transferred to the west end and toured the UK twice. Thea was then made Britain’s youngest artistic director when she took over the Southwark Playhouse for three years, before then going on to be the artistic director of the Gate Theatre in Notting Hill.

Her debut feature, Me Before You (2016), was a commercial hit, earning over $200 million at the box office and winning the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie in 2017. Sharrock’s follow-up feature, The One and Only Isaac (2020), was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. Her latest work, Wicked Little Letters (2024), premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received a nomination for Best Feature Film at the Cleveland International Film Festival.
