About the film:
At 58, celebrated romantic-comedy director Joe Fulton (Bill Sage) decides to leave the spotlight and applies to be a groundskeeper at a city cemetery — a modest job where he can “feel tired at the end of the day.” But when he also prepares his last will and testament, his girlfriend, family and friends assume he’s dying, and they begin gathering to say their farewells. In this quietly witty and contemplative farce, Joe grapples with mortality, legacy and the strange idea of choosing a simpler life, while those around him struggle to understand his quiet shift away from fame and toward the ordinary.
Through minimal drama and lots of conversational pauses, Hal Hartley uses Joe’s journey to explore questions of what we truly value, what work means, how material possessions bind us — and, ultimately, where we land when we’re no longer chasing the next big scene.
