About the film:
Set against the sweeping wilderness of the early 20th-century American Northwest, Train Dreams follows Robert Grainier (Joel Edgerton), a humble logger and railroad worker whose quiet life is upended by tragedy and transformation as America hurtles into modernity. When a mysterious fire claims his family, Grainier is left to wander the vast frontier — a man haunted by memory, myth, and the encroaching machinery of progress.
Adapted from Denis Johnson’s celebrated novella, the film is a lyrical meditation on solitude, loss, and the fading frontier spirit. With stunning natural photography, meticulous period detail, and emotionally restrained performances from Edgerton and Felicity Jones, Train Dreams transforms the American landscape into both a physical and spiritual wilderness.
Premiering to acclaim at the Venice International Film Festival, and later featured at Telluride and Toronto, Train Dreams has been hailed by critics as a “modern elegy for the vanishing West” and “one of the most visually poetic American films of the year.”
A tender, elegiac portrait of a man and a nation at the edge of change, Train Dreams reminds us that progress always leaves ghosts behind.
