“One of the finest films ever made!”

—The New York Times

Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten), a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives in a bombed-out, post-war Vienna at the invitation of his childhood friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles) only to find him dead. Martins develops the ultimate conspiracy theory after learning of a “third man” present at the time of Harry’s death, butting up against interference from British police officer Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), and falling head-over-heels for Harry’s grief-stricken lover Anna (Alida Valli).

About the filmmaker:

Carol Reed was an English film director and producer who earned acclaim with his sharp eye for detail, unpretentious style, and knack for extracting fine performances from his actors. He directed a trio of landmark films—Odd Man Out (1947), The Fallen Idol (1948), and his masterpiece The Third Man (1949)—which together earned him the first, second, and third ever BAFTA Awards for Outstanding British Film. In 1999, The Third Man (1949) was voted the greatest British film of the 20th century by the British Film Institute. Among other work, his musical film Oliver! (1968) won six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, and The True Glory (1945), co-directed with Garson Kanin using footage shot by Allied army cameramen during WWII, earned the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
