Liam, an aspiring and ambitious young writer, eagerly accepts a tutoring position at the family estate of his idol, renowned author J.M. Sinclair. But soon, Liam realizes that he is ensnared in a web of family secrets, resentment, and retribution. Sinclair, his wife Hélène, and their son Bertie all guard a dark past, one that threatens Liam’s future as well as their own. As the lines between master and protégé blur, class, ambition, and betrayal become a dangerous combination in this taut noir thriller.
About the filmmaker:
Alice Troughton is an emerging voice in British cinema making her feature debut with The Lesson (2023). Her previous work is primarily in genre television series. She got her start directing episodes of the award-winning, long-running series Doctors and EastEnders. From 2006-2009, she directed several episodes of Doctor Who and spin-offs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. Among other projects, she directed episodes of Amazon’s horror drama Lore (2018), Netflix’s sci-fi epic Lost in Space (2018), as well as episodes of Baghdad Central (2020), A Discovery of Witches (2018), Tin Star (2017-2020), The Living and the Dead (2016), The Flash (2016), DC’s Legends of Tomorrow (2016-2017) and Teen Wolf (2015).
