About the film:
“one of the greatest monster movies ever made”
—Logan Hill for New York Magazine
Gang-du works at a food stand on the banks of the Han River. Dozing on the job, he is awakened by his daughter, Hyun-seo, who is angry with him for missing a teacher-parent meeting at school. The otherwise idyllic landscape suddenly descends into bedlam when a terrifying creature climbs onto the riverbank and begins crushing and devouring people. Gang-du and his daughter run for their lives, but the creature suddenly grabs Hyun-seo and disappears back into the water.
The government announces that the monstrous creature is apparently the Host of an unidentified virus. Having feared the worst, Gang-du is stunned when he receives a phone call from his daughter. She is frightened—but very much alive. Determined to rescue her, Gang-du soon makes plans to infiltrate the forbidden zone near the Han River and save his daughter from the clutches of the horrifying Host.
An early cut of The Host (2006) debuted in the Directors’ Fortnight at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, and the finished film became the highest-grossing South Korean film of all time.

About the filmmaker:
Bong Joon Ho is a South Korean filmmaker known for the meticulous directing, social critique, blending of genres, and quick tonal shifts in his movies, many of which he also co-wrote. He gained a cult following with his darkly comedic feature debut Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000) before breaking box-office records in his homeland with crime drama Memories of Murder (2003) and monster movie The Host (2006). He followed up with the critically acclaimed Mother (2009) before making his mark on English-language cinema with the spectacular sci-fi fantasy Snowpiercer (2013) and the fantasy adventure Okja (2017), which premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. His 2019 film Parasite is often hailed as his masterpiece; it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and became the first foreign language film to receive the Academy Award for Best Picture. His newest film, Mickey 17 (2024), is based on the sci-fi novel Mickey7 by Ashton Edward.
