An emotionally distant writer returns to his hometown of Cleveland for his beloved mother’s funeral, after having spent years successfully avoiding interactions with his high-strung sister, bumbling but well-meaning father, and untrustworthy step-father. While in town, he forges a new relationship with a charming, energetic stranger who pushes him to realize that he can’t avoid conflict forever — with his family or within himself.
About the filmmaker:
Robert Schwartzman is an American actor, director, and producer. His breakout acting roles included portraying Paul Baldino in The Virgin Suicides (1999) and Michael Moscovitz in The Princess Diaries (2001). His directorial debut Dreamland (2016) earned him the award for Best Director for a Debut Feature at the 2016 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, and his following film The Unicorn (2018) earned a nomination for Best Narrative Feature at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival. In 2023, Schwartzman directed his first documentary, Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary. The film went on to win the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2023 Nantucket Film Festival. Schwartzman’s newest feature, The Good Half (2024), premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and is set in Cleveland, Ohio.
