SXSW Audience Award Winner and CIFF nominee for Best American Independent Feature Film. A young Mexican trans woman and her grandmother struggle to build a life for themselves as undocumented immigrants in New York City.

An unsentimental drama committed to exploring the challenges and violence faced by the transgender community.

The first independent film to be partially crowdfunded through the sale of donated items on eBay. Received support from organizations amplifying the creative voices of marginalized communities, including GLAAD, Jerome Foundation, NYSCA, Trans Filmmakers Project, IFP Narrative Lab, NALIP, and Film at Lincoln Center, among others.

About the filmmaker:

Feature directorial debut for Flavio Alves. Granted political asylum after writing a controversial book about his life as a gay man in the Brazilian navy, Alves worked in politics before studying film production at NYU. His short films have screened at film festivals around the world, with The Secret Friend (2010) winning Best Women’s Short Film and Tom in America (2014) winning Honorable Mention for Best LGBT Short Film at the Cleveland International Film Festival. In 2018, Alves received The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Artist Academy fellowship.
