About the filmmaker:
Feature directorial debut for Flavio Alves. Granted political asylum after writing a controversial book about his life as a gay man in the Brazilian navy, Alves worked in politics before studying film production at NYU. His short films have screened at film festivals around the world, with The Secret Friend (2010) winning Best Women’s Short Film and Tom in America (2014) winning Honorable Mention for Best LGBT Short Film at the Cleveland International Film Festival. In 2018, Alves received The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Artist Academy fellowship.
