On her way to school, 17-year-old Suzume meets Souta, a mysterious young man in search of a door. Her curiosity leads her to a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. On an impulse, she turns the handle, and sets free all the calamities the portal was meant to contain.

Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume and Souta set out on a journey to set things right.
