Spider-Mondays at Gateway Film Center

As part of Columbia Pictures 100th Anniversary, we are bringing all of the live action Spider-Man movies back to the Film Center on Mondays April 15–June 3, 2024.

About the film:

The first installment in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, Spider-Man (2002) reinvigorated the superhero genre and was nominated for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects at the 75th Academy Awards.

“Perhaps the most spot-on film adaptation of a comic book superhero yet.”

—Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle

Average teenager Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is transformed into an extraordinary super hero after he is accidentally bitten by a radioactive spider. When his beloved uncle is savagely murdered during a robbery, young Peter vows to use his powers to avenge his death. Deeming himself “Spider-Man,” he sets about ridding the streets of crime, bringing him into conflict with malevolent super-villain “Green Goblin.”

About the filmmaker:

Sam Raimi is a highly inventive American filmmaker who developed his dynamic visual style crafting short stories and the savage, darkly humorous horror features The Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), and Army of Darkness (1992). He helmed a wide variety of films, including his original superhero story Darkman (1990), western The Quick and the Dead (1995), crime thriller A Simple Plan (1998), baseball film For Love of the Game (1999), and fantasy The Gift (2000) before being handed the reins of Stan Lee’s web-slinging comic book superhero for Spider-Man (2002) and its sequels. With his latest feature, he brought a bit of horror to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
