James Merendino is an American writer and director best known for one of his most personal and enduring films, the cult classic SLC Punk! (1998), a coming-of-age story inspired by the punk scene and counterculture of Salt Lake City, Utah. The film premiered as the opening-night film at the Sundance Film Festival, and the screenplay earned Merendino an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Screenplay. Throughout his career, Merendino explored life on the margins of mainstream culture across a wide range of genres, including drama, thriller, horror, and comedy, in independent films like The Upstairs Neighbor (1994), A River Made to Drown In (1996), Magicians (2000), Dogma 95 film Amerikana (2001), The Invisible Life of Thomas Lynch (2009), and Punk’s Dead: SLC Punk 2 (2016).
