The 1998 surrealist psychological thriller stars Sean Gullette as a mathematician who becomes obsessed with searching for patterns in the universe as part of a quest for meaning. The film earned Aronofsky the Directing Award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.
About the filmmaker:
Darren Aronofsky is an acclaimed American film director, producer, and screenwriter. His stories, some of the most memorable of the last two decades, are noted for their surrealistic, melodramatic, and sometimes disturbing elements as well as an unconventional spirituality and environmental activism. In 1997, he founded the production company Protozoa Pictures, and crafted the feature films Pi (1998), Requiem for a Dream (2000), The Fountain (2006), The Wrestler (2008), Black Swan (2010) – which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director – Noah (2014), Mother! (2017), and his latest award-winning feature The Whale (2022). Aronofsky studied film and social anthropology at Harvard before studying directing at the American Film Institute.
