Hirayama seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. And he loves trees and takes photos of them. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past.

About the filmmaker:
Wim Wenders is a German filmmaker, playwright, author, and photographer. He is a major figure in New German Cinema. He has received three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for Buena Vista Social Club (1999), Pina (2011), and The Salt of the Earth (2014). He won a BAFTA Award for Best Direction for his narrative drama Paris, Texas (1984), which also won the Palme d’Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. Many of his subsequent films have also been recognized at Cannes, including the Best Director winner Wings of Desire (1987) and his recent feature Perfect Days (2023), which competed for the Palme d’Or and won Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
