About the film:
In the classic Greek tragedy, a snake bites Eurydice on her wedding day, and her new husband, Orpheus, travels to the Underworld to bring her back.
Virgilio Villoresi’s expressionistic adaptation of the tale is based on Dino Buzzati’s 1969 Poema a fumetti, one of Italy’s first graphic novels. The film is a modern reimagining with an aesthetic untethered from reality: a kaleidoscopic journey through time and place, reflecting on art, love, mystery, eroticism, melancholy, life, and death.
Orfeo (2026) premiered out of competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.

About the filmmaker:
Virgilio Villoresi is an Italian filmmaker making his feature debut with the expressionistic fantasy film Orfeo (2026), shot on 16mm and combining live action and stop-motion animation. Raised among classical dance, piano, and avant-garde theatre, Villoresi began exploring live media—both musical and visual—before starting his cinematic journey in 2005 with Frigidaire, a short film combining stop-motion and collage techniques. In 2009 he directed the short film J, which was exhibited at Art Basel Miami and presented at the New York International Children’s Festival in 2010.
Since then, Villoresi has created acclaimed short films, music videos, and audiovisual works for international artists and brands. His commercials and music videos have received numerous awards, including Cartoons on the Bay, New York Film Festival, Amsterdam Film Festival, and a nomination for the Young Director Award at Cannes Lions 2014. In 2016, he was honored with two retrospectives: at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and the Pesaro International Festival of New Cinema.
