From Mexico, his Spanish language films earned him a place on the international stage beginning with his sensational 1993 feature debut Cronos, which was Mexico’s official submission to the Academy Awards, followed by The Devil’s Backbone and the universally acclaimed Pan’s Labyrinth. His other features include Hellboy, Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water, which earned three prizes at Venice before winning Best Picture and Best Directing at the 2018 Academy Awards.
Nightmare Alley was adapted by del Toro and Kim Morgan from William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name.
