About the filmmaker:
Todd Haynes is an influential director, screenwriter, and producer with one of the most distinctive voices in American cinema. He is a major filmmaker in the New Queer Cinema movement. With his longtime producer Christine Vachon, he has crafted provocative stories of artists and performers, including controversial short film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), 70s glam rock tribute Velvet Goldmine (1998) inspired by Iggy Pop and David Bowie, and I’m Not There (2007) with six different actors playing personas inspired by Bob Dylan.
His other work includes his feature directorial debut Poison (1991), Safe (1995), Far From Heaven (2002), the HBO mini-series Mildred Pierce (2011), Carol (2015), Wonderstruck (2017), Dark Waters (2019) and his first documentary The Velvet Underground (2021). Among other accolades, his films have won top prizes at major festivals around the world, including Cannes, Venice, Sundance, and Berlin. May December (2023), his sixth film with lead Julianne Moore, competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
