Dean Fleischer Camp is an Academy Award nominated writer, director, editor, producer and New York Times-bestselling children’s book author. Since appearing on Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film in 2011, Fleischer Camp’s work at the intersection of comedy, character animation, and documentary storytelling has been profiled in virtually every major American media outlet.
His debut feature Fraud (2018), a true crime documentary crafted entirely from a stranger’s YouTube uploads, was met with widespread controversy and acclaim– hailed as a “brilliantly provocative” (Filmmaker) “masterwork” (IDA’s Documentary Magazine) that “pushes the boundaries of documentary film” (Variety) while also eliciting heated reactions and even some physical fights from audiences at its festival screenings.
His sophomore effort, A24’s Marcel The Shell With Shoes On (2021) was released to widespread acclaim, ultimately becoming Rotten Tomatoes’ best-reviewed film of 2022. It won multiple “Best Animated Film” honors including those from the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle, and garnered BAFTA, Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Academy Awards nominations.
