About the film:

Set in the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s, Paul Thomas Anderson’s much-anticipated new story follows high school student Gary Valentine, who is also a successful child actor, and photographer’s assistant Alana Kane as they grow up, run around, and navigate first love in southern California.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza received nominations at the 94th Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.

About the filmmaker:

One of the most celebrated American filmmakers working today, eight-time Academy Award nominee Paul Thomas Anderson is known for his bold visual style, flawed characters, and frequent collaborations with actors and musicians. A regular at film festivals around the world, Anderson has won Best Director at Cannes for Punch-Drunk Love, Berlin for There Will Be Blood, and Venice for The Master. His other phenomenal projects include his debut feature Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Inherent Vice, and Phantom Thread, which was nominated for both Best Picture and Best Directing at the 2018 Academy Awards.

Named for the regional record chain, Licorice Pizza was inspired by the life experiences of Anderson and his friend, filmmaker Gary Goetzman.
