About the film:

World Premiere, Cannes Film Festival 2023.

Everyone has their own Chimera, something they try to achieve but never manage to find. For the band of tombaroli, thieves of ancient grave goods and archaeological wonders, the Chimera means redemption from work and the dream of easy wealth. For Arthur, the Chimera looks like the woman he lost, Beniamina. To find her, Arthur challenges the invisible, searches everywhere, goes inside the earth – in search of the door to the afterlife of which myths speak.

In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, between forests and cities, between celebrations and solitudes, the intertwined destinies of these characters unfold, all in search of the Chimera.

“The further down the film descends, the more transfixing its images tend to get, as if Rohrwacher and Louvart have teamed up on an archaeological dig for their own treasures of texture and light.”

—Tim Robey, Daily Telegraph (UK)

About the filmmaker:

A leading figure in Italian auteur cinema, Alice Rohrwacher studied Literature and Philosophy at the University of Turin. She wrote and directed her first fiction feature film Heavenly Body in 2011, which screened at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight where it was awarded the Nastro d’argento. In 2014, she returned to Cannes Film Festival in competition with her second feature film The Wonders (2014) starring her sister, Alba Rohrwacher, and Monica Bellucci. The film won the Grand Prix and established her as a major female director of the new generation of trans-Alpine filmmakers. In 2018, she returned to Cannes once again with her film Happy as Lazzaro (2018) where her writing skills earned her the Best Screenplay Award. Rohrwacher’s short film Le Pupille (2022) was nominated for Best Short Film—Live Action at the 2023 Academy Awards. Her newest feature, La Chimera (2024), premiered at Cannes in 2023.
