When Blanche meets the charismatic Gregoire at a party her twin sister Rose drags her to, she thinks she has found the one. The ties that bind them grow quickly, and a passionate affair ensues. Rose has serious reservations about Gregoire, but against her better judgment, they decide to marry and move in together. Blanche and Gregoire soon relocate far from Blanche’s family where her new life begins; having two children, working as an elementary school teacher, and learning to tiptoe around Gregoire’s unfounded burgeoning insecurities. Little by little Blanche finds herself caught in the grip of a deeply possessive and dangerous man, desperate to escape his increasingly threatening affections. Adapted from Éric Reinhardt’s prize-winning novel L’amour et les forêts by Valérie Donzelli and Audrey Diwan.

About the filmmaker:
Valérie Donzelli is a French actor and filmmaker from Épinal, France. She first studied architecture in Paris, which she gave up to study acting at the city’s acting conservatory. After acting in a few small roles in short films and television, Donzelli took on her first leading role in Dir. Sandrine Veysset’s Martha… Martha (2001), for which she was awarded the Prix Michel Simon for Best Actress. Donzelli made her feature film directorial debut in 2009 with The Queen of Hearts, and in 2011 she made the semi- autobiographical Declaration of War, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival and received numerous film awards. In 2016, Valérie Donzelli was president of the International Critics’ Week Jury at the Cannes Film Festival. Her newest film Just the Two of Us (2024) premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
