About the filmmaker:
Walter Thompson-Hernández is a filmmaker, former journalist, and author who has established himself as a powerful, distinct voice in contemporary storytelling. Drawing on his experiences in the real world, he brings a documentarian’s intimacy and an eye for the unexpected to creating lyrical narratives exploring identity, belonging, memory, and the poetry of everyday life. His short film If I Go Will They Miss Me (2022) won the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Fiction Short Film Festival Award. He made his feature debut with Kites (2025), which won the Tribeca Film Festival’s Special Jury Mention for Viewpoints. For his second feature, If I Go Will They Miss Me (2026), an expansion of his award-winning short film, Thompson-Hernández was named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch during the 37th Palm Springs International Film Festival.
