Friday (1995) is a celebrated cult buddy comedy and the first feature film from director J. Gray Gray (2003’s The Italian Job, 2015’s Straight Outta Compton), co-written by DJ Pooh and Ice Cube based on his own experiences in Los Angeles.
About the filmmaker:
F. Gary Gray is a prolific and versatile filmmaker, music video director, and actor. He made his feature film debut directing the cult favorite Friday (1995), followed by acclaimed feature films like Law Abiding Citizen (2009), The Negotiator (1998), Set It Off (1996) and The Italian Job (2003), which earned him Best Director at the 2004 Black American Film Festival. His recent work includes the critically acclaimed biopic Straight Outta Compton (2015) and franchise films The Fate of the Furious (2017) and Men in Black: International (2019). In addition to his filmmaking, Gray is a successful music video director, garnering a Grammy nomination along with multiple MTV and Billboard awards for his work with artists such as Jay-Z, TLC, Ice Cube, Rick Ross, Outkast, and more. Gray’s most well known work in advertising is The Call, a trailer for Pepsi’s Super Bowl LVI starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.
