Joe Swanberg is an American filmmaker, writer, producer, and actor known for his influential role in the independent film movement often associated with “mumblecore.” His prolific, naturalistic work explores relationships, intimacy, work, and the complications of contemporary adult life, frequently using improvisation and close collaboration with his actors. Swanberg’s films include Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007), Alexander the Last (2009), Drinking Buddies (2013), Happy Christmas (2014), Digging for Fire (2015), and Win It All (2017). He also created the Netflix anthology series Easy, further developing his distinctive approach to character-driven storytelling and interconnected relationships.
