Matthew Shear is an American filmmaker, writer, and actor known for his work in independent cinema and character-driven storytelling. As an actor, he has appeared in films such as Mistress America (2015), The Boy Downstairs (2017), and Marriage Story (2019). Shear made his feature directorial debut with Fantasy Life (2026), bringing his distinctive sensibility as a performer to the director’s chair. His work often explores the awkwardness, humor, and emotional complexity of modern relationships within the world of contemporary independent film.
