About the filmmaker:

Besson began his career as one of French cinema’s burgeoning bad boys in the 1980s, part of a generation (along with Jean-Jacques Beineix and Jean-Jacques Annaud) that critics disparagingly labeled the “cinema du look.” With a gifted eye for set-pieces and a unique approach to directing action thrillers, including casting women in the lead roles, he made his English-language debut in 1994 with Leon: The Professional. That and his previous film, La Femme Nikita (1990), arguably remain his best works to date — unless you prefer the jaunty, over-the-top hijinks of sci-fi blockbusters like The Fifth Element (1997). Even as he neared the 30-year mark in his career, Besson continued to rack up impressive writer-producer credits on such international smash hits as Taken (2008). His latest film, DogMan (2023), was partially inspired by an article Besson read about a French family who threw their own child in a cage when he was five; Besson wanted to explore how that experience may affect someone’s development and world view. Dogman (2023) won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival.
