About the film:

A few days before Christmas, having quit his job in Germany, Matthias returns to his multi-ethnic Transylvanian village. He wishes to involve himself more in the education of his son, Rudi, left for too long in the care of his mother, Ana, and to rid the boy of the unresolved fears that have taken hold of him. He’s preoccupied with his old father, Otto, and also eager to see his ex-lover, Csilla.

When a few new workers are hired at the small factory that Csilla manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin veneer of apparent understanding and calm.

“Further evidence that [Mungiu] is one of the world’s most interesting dramatists.”

—Brian Tallerico for Roger Ebert

R.M.N. (2023) premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and originally premiered at the Film Center in May 2023.

About the filmmaker:

Cristian Mungiu is a celebrated Romanian filmmaker whose work often explores his country’s contemporary society and politics. He is a familiar face at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2002, he debuted his first feature film, Occident, in the Director’s Fortnight section. He became the first Romanian to win the Palme d’Or in 2007 for his film 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, and the tenth filmmaker ever to win twice after his film Fjord won in 2026. Mungiu also won Best Director in 2016 for Graduation and Best Screenplay in 2012 for Beyond the Hills, which was also selected as the Romanian entry and made the shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards. In 2013, Mungiu was selected as a member of the main competition jury, and in 2021, he was the Jury President of the Semaine de la Critique non-competitive section. His feature R.M.N. competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2022 festival.
