World Premiere, 2023 SXSW Film Festival

The director of 2020’s Shiva Baby returns with a refreshingly unique comedy. Two girls, PJ and Josie, start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. And their bizarre plan works! The fight club gains traction, and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But PJ and Josie find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.

“unlike any high-school comedy you’ve ever seen”

—Owen Gleiberman, Variety

The film went on to receive Independent Spirit Award nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Breakthrough Performance (Marshawn Lynch).

About the filmmaker:

Emma Seligman is a Canadian writer and director whose filmmaking journey began at age nine as a jury member at TIFF’s Sprockets festival for kids. They made her feature directorial debut with the sharp-witted dark comedy Shiva Baby (2020) which premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, screened at Toronto, and won the L.A. OutFest screenwriting prize and the John Cassavetes Award at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards. Seligman developed the film from their NYU thesis, a comedy short which premiered at the 2018 SXSW film festival. In 2020, they were named one of Variety’s 10 “Screenwriters to Watch” and one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “25 New Faces of Independent Film”.

Their second feature film Bottoms (2023), written with regular collaborator and star Rachel Sennott, was nominated for a 2023 SXSW Audience Award.
