After the success of Point Blank (1967) and Deliverance (1972), Warner Brothers offered John Boorman the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to direct a sequel to their smash hit, The Exorcist (1973). The result was one of the biggest disasters in movie history. A critical and financial failure that not only changed how Hollywood did business, but nearly ended Boorman’s filmmaking career.
Featuring commentary from surviving participants, as well as other filmmakers and critics, this documentary chronicles Boorman’s career and the tumultuous production of Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977), exploring its critical and commercial failure, how it changed the industry, and the importance of risk-taking in art.

About the filmmaker:
David Kittredge is an American director, editor, writer, and producer. An all-around cinema geek, Kittedge became obsessed with director John Boorman’s Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) and embarked on a seven year journey to tell the story of one of the most audacious, big-budget creative swings in Hollywood history. The resulting film, Boorman and the Devil (2026), premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival. Kittredge’s earlier work includes directing the award-winning feature film Pornography: A Thriller (2009) and editing 54: The Director’s Cut, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015.
