About the film:

Written, directed by, and starring Emmy Award-winner Michael Goorjian, Amerikatsi (2023) won Best Narrative Feature at the 2022 Woodstock Film Festival and was selected as the official Armenian entry for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.

In 1948, decades after fleeing Armenia to the US as a child, Charlie (Goorjian) returns in the hope of finding a connection to his roots, but what he finds instead is a country crushed under Soviet rule. After being unjustly imprisoned, Charlie falls into despair, until he discovers that he can see into a nearby apartment from his cell window – the home of a prison guard.

As his life unexpectedly becomes entwined with the man’s, he begins to see that the true spirit of his homeland is alive in its passionate people. Filled with warmth and humor, Amerikatsi (2023) celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the bonds that unite us all.

About the filmmaker:

Michael Goorjian is an Emmy Award-winning actor, writer, and filmmaker of Armenian descent, born and raised in San Francisco. As an actor, he is known for playing Justin on Party of Five (1994–2000) as well as Heroin Bob in the cult classic SLC Punk (1998), which was selected as the opening night feature at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. His other credits include roles in the feature films Newsies (1992)Chaplin (1992), Forever Young (1992), and Leaving Las Vegas (1995), as well as the TV movies The Wizard of Lies (2017) and his Emmy-winning supporting actor role in David’s Mother (1994). Goorjian directed, wrote, and starred in his debut feature film Illusion (2004) and his award-winning feature film Amerikatsi (2023).
