Mabel Longhetti, desperate and lonely, is married to a Los Angeles municipal construction worker, Nick. Increasingly unstable, especially in the company of others, she craves happiness, but her extremely volatile behavior convinces Nick that she poses a danger to their family and decides to commit her to an institution for six months. Alone with a trio of kids to raise on his own, he awaits her return, which holds more than a few surprises.

About the filmmaker:

John Cassavetes was an American film director, actor, and screenwriter. He is regarded as the father of the independent film movement in the United States. First known as an actor on television and in film, Cassavetes starred in notable Hollywood films throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including Edge of the City (1957), The Dirty Dozen (1967), and Rosemary’s Baby (1968). Cassavetes became a pioneer of American independent cinema, writing and directing movies. He began his directing career with the 1959 independent feature Shadows and followed with independent productions such as Faces (1968), Husbands (1970), A Woman Under the Influence (1974), Opening Night (1977), and Love Streams (1984). His films are known for taking an actor-centered approach that prioritized character examination over traditional Hollywood storytelling or stylized production values.
